Re: “Mailbag

Bill Cottles' comments are indicative of many, I hope not a majority, of white people in Arizona. Arizona is beautiful and the indigenous people are the major reason I came here to enjoy the music, the food, the language, the customs, and the fascinating people who have been here long before white immigrants arrived. These indigenous cultures and their families have been moving across this "border" long before the border was established. What I don't get is why the white immigrants don't realize that the old cultures, art, music, architecture, food, etc are not just wonderful to experience but powerful economic assets to the state. Instead of constantly working to separate us into "Americans" and "illegals" why not try to assimilate and integrate and understand the cultures of the people who were here before you arrived? Why can't we be friends? Why do so many newcomers choose to live in gated communities and fear Mexicans? It is this fear and lack of understanding that breeds distrust and racism.
In a recent interview with Bill O'Reilly, John McCain agreed with O'Reilly when he said the male white power structure is at stake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBmkvLEhNvs…). Bill Cottles also seems to fear the male white power structure is at stake. That kind of thinking will not help us to continue to be the UNITED States of America. That kind of thinking creates walls much more powerful than any wall that can be built along the border.

Re: “Political Insanity

If a white chicken lays an egg, chances are it will produce a white chicken.
If a group of racists like FAIR, Kris Kobach and Russell Pearce get together and hatch a bill, the chances of it's having a racial intent is extremely high.
Aside from the racial intention, the law is a disaster for crime fighting. Austin, Texas Police Chief Art Acevedo took the editorial page of the Statesman to say the bill "killed community policing" and "essentially declared open season for criminals to target illegal immigrants" by making immigration – not crime prevention – priority No. 1, noting in the process that execrable Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has seen "a marked increase in crime, especially violent crime" since initiating his anti-immigrant crusade.

The Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police remains in opposition to Senate Bill 1070," the release said. "The provisions of the bill remain problematic and will negatively affect the ability of law enforcement agencies across the state to fulfill their many responsibilities in a timely manner." Re: “Danehy

The last time I was down in south texas, the place where more than 500 lynchings took place as late as the 1950's, a sign outside Buna prominently posted near the freeway ramp said "Nigger don't let the sun set on your black ass in Buna". Posted along with it was a Confederate flag. Still proud of your Confederate heritage? Want Arizona to be more like Texas?

Re: “Danehy

Why does this little group of racists and loudmouths get so much press? If you want to see a real protest, only a month ago more than 200,000 people gathered in D.C. to show their support for immigration reform, unfortunately on the same day health care was passed - completely ignored by the mainstream media.
I remember the massive crowds (100's of thousands, millions) that turned out all across the nation and the world to protest the Iraq war - largely ignored and downplayed by mainstream media. The size of the crowds during the Viet Nam war and the civil rights periods dwarfed the miniscule "crowds" at Tea Party events.
The dirfference? FOX News! The Tea Party is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Roger Ailes and FreedomWerks and FOX news anchors are raising millions for conservative Tea Party candidates. And they call it fair and balanced journalism and the AZ Star and mainstream media lap it up and put it on the front page.
