Remember that kid from school who knew that she was going to grow up to be an artist? That was me. From drawing scenes on the back of placemats to painting a mural in my middle school, I enjoyed using a variety of media. In Union-Endicott High School, I decided to pursue a career as a graphic artist. This goal took me to Philadelphia for a Bachelors in Graphic Design from Drexel University. While at Drexel, I had academic and athletic scholarships. I played collegiate tennis and still have a mean forehand. Following my graduation from Drexel, I worked as an in-house designer After moving to Tucson, I became an art director. I also went back to school, this time for a Master’s in Business. In 2005, I started my own graphic design studio, 24-7 Creative Solutions. Although design has been a computer-based field for nearly three decades, I missed the process of creating art with paints and canvas. So, I have returned to expressing myself with a paintbrush. My latest project, Desert Dwellers Flash Cards, arose out of a desire to teach my son about the amazing wildlife of the Southwest while he practiced the letters of the alphabet. But I found that all the flash cards he was playing with showed narwhals, unicorns, and other creatures that we don’t see here in Arizona. So, I began a 26-painting series showing Southern Arizona’s native wildlife. In April 2012, my Desert Dwellers series was featured in a guest artist exhibit at the Madaras Gallery. Diana Madaras has been a wonderful mentor and has been very supportive of my Desert Dwellers project. I’ve just released the Desert Dwellers series as educational flash cards. They are available online. Julie can be reached at: Julie (at) julieoriginals (Dot) com @julieoriginals facebook.com/JulieOriginals
