Re: “#RedForEd Still On, Despite Ducey's Promise of Raises

Do your kids a favor. Take them out of public school and put them in a charter. My kids were in a terrible public elementary school, constantly bullied, and not really learning much. They didn't even know multiplication or division in 4th/5th grade. We were actually trying to teach them things ourselves that should have been taught in class. Their teachers were not motivated or helpful. Basically, our kids who once loved school grew to hate it and had lost any desire to learn things. We knew a change was necessary so we rolled the dice on a charter.

Our experience has been amazing. Academic expectations are higher (or more accurately, they are in line with what we learned in school, maybe even a bit more) and they sure had a lot of catching up to do. That actually made them like school again, because it was a challenge, and they could feel proud of their accomplishments, it's no longer just boring babysitting. There is a school culture where learning is what's cool, not getting into trouble, and my kids are no longer bullied. Broken computers? None... they're using Chromebooks and the textbooks are fine too. Also, they've gone on cool science-related field trips and have used the free after school tutoring (can you imagine a public school teacher staying after to help a struggling student?). Wish we'd done this sooner!

Have to echo the above poster: TUSD is obviously wasting money outside the classroom. They're too big and inefficient, and have no need to change, as they can just keep hiking our taxes to pay for their failures. Charters are small, lightweight, and responsive. Try it for a year and you'll see why public schools are bleeding kids and having to close down.

Re: “In the Wake of Voter Rejection of Bond Package, Tucson Mayor Rothschild Says City May Need To Go It Alone

"We need more money"... meanwhile there are buildings full of govt bureaucrats collecting paychecks and pensions. How many of those useless paper pusher drains on society are you willing to sacrifice to pay the bills? None of course! Those are your pals. You'd do anything to protect them, including going into bond debt with the poor of the city having to pay it back. If we cut the fat, we would have plenty of cash for roads, parks, and police.
