Inception

Rated PG-13 148 minutes 2010

Christopher Nolan’s Inception isn't the year’s best film, but it is, without a doubt, the most original and daring big-budget movie to get released in a long time. More than 75 percent of the film, which runs almost 150 minutes, doesn’t actually happen. It’s all taking place within a dream, or a dream within a dream, or—in the film’s climactic moments—a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream. It’s a painstakingly modern and complex take on the formulaic heist picture. They’ve been around since The Great Train Robbery more than 100 years ago, and we can see just how far the form has come. And now it won’t ever go back.
