In a Better World

Rated R 113 minutes 2010

This is your Best Foreign Language Film Oscar-winner, and parts of it, at least, live up to the advance billing. In a Better World comes from Denmark and director Susanne Bier, and comes at a time when its subject—teen bullying, to boil it down—is a hot-button issue here in the United States. Unfortunately, In a Better World veers a little too far to properly make its overall point, but it has solid performances from both adult and child actors, none of whom are familiar faces, and is a well-crafted, well-photographed film. A lot of foreign films struggle to resonate with American audiences, but that should not be the case here. Bier has made an American film before (the 2007 release Things We Lost in the Fire), and the story is easy to put into universal terms.
