Jim Carrey is at his funniest as a con artist who falls in love with a man (Ewan McGregor) while in prison—and he’ll do anything to make the relationship work, including escaping from prison and masquerading as everything from a big-company chief financial officer to a lawyer. This is best described as a gay Catch Me If You Can, and the two stars enjoy their best roles in years. This one sat on the shelf for some time, leading to speculation that the film was bad. Well, it’s not. It’s actually very funny—and surprisingly dark and edgy, considering the talent involved. While Carrey has always been willing to step away from his mainstream persona, this role is a trip to another universe. As outlandish as the whole film seems, it is actually based upon a true story.
