French-Canadian writer-director-actor Xavier Dolan knows how to make a pretty movie, with pretty music and pretty people. It’s his story, about a love triangle, that needs work. A lot of work. Dolan plays Francis, friend of Marie (Monia Chokri). They meet—and both fall in love with—Nicolas (Niels Schneider), a curly-haired charmer who seems to relish their attentions. He even shares a bed with them—but never gives it up. Dolan does a wonderful job with his soundtrack, and some of his visuals (especially a party scene with strobe lights) are quite good. But the whole idea that these two would fall helplessly for Nicolas, who is mildly amusing, at best, gives the movie a staged, stagnant feel. I’m curious to see what Dolan does next; I’m thinking making a film based on somebody else’s script would be a good idea.
