Sen. Elizabeth Warren did present a bill to lower the rate to .75% for the exact reason ChetDude mentioned above. Apparently, this didn't garner much mainstream media time. Our corporate congress is beholden to everyone but their constituents.

What the Senate passed is just a bad bill altogether. It narrows the immigration process so badly it's hardly recognizable. Even worse than that, it will cost us taxpayers billions to militarize the border. Do you really think 42,000 Border Patrol guards are necessary? That places one nearly every 500 feet along the border. Unmanned drones cost us taxpayers $3200 an hr. Drones already fly along the border, and this bill allows for many more. It's a cash cow that will create an ongoing system of revenue for corporations.

Why do we want to spend billions to continue erecting a wall when we just finally took one down only a couple decades ago in Germany? What does this say about America? Don't we look like hypocrites? Did you know that today border security costs us taxpayers $18 Bill. a year? That's more than what taxpayers contribute to the FBI, U.S. Marshalls, DEA & the Secret Service combined.

In April, 2012, the Pew Hispanic Center found that net migration from Mexico had fallen to zero, or perhaps even lower. If the current bill passes, half a dozen military firms will work to secure Homeland Security contracts worth as much as $1 Billion.

While I fully support immigration, this is a bad bill. As a resident of Tucson for over 30 years, and of Phoenix for nearly 30 years prior, I strongly object to the militarization of the border. We don't need a Border Patrol agent every 500 feet. By 2014, there will be nearly 42,000 agents along the border. These are our tax dollars. Meanwhile, the road to citizenship in the present form of the bill has been watered down and hijacked. This will be a cash cow for private contractors. Unmanned drones cost the gov't (us taxpayers) $3200 an hr. Today, border security costs taxpayers $18 Bil. a year--more than what taxpayers contribute to the FBI, U.S. Marshalls, DEA & the Secret Service COMBINED.
In April, 2012, the Pew Hispanic Center found that net migration from Mexico had fallen to zero, or perhaps even lower. The money set aside in this bill, could instead be used for education, to protect Social Security.....

Kudos to these creative young adults for their ingenuity and perseverance! This mine is the project of a Canadian multi-national corp. that will only bring destruction to our beautiful area. The Corporation will profit immensely and leave devastation in its wake.

These greedy Trans-National mining companies, with origins in Canada are trying to push through at least 3 dirty mines in AZ that I know of. The public is fighting hard up in Eloy against another one...and one at the Grand Canyon. Check for yourself where else in the world these Trans-National corporations are also mining....many, many locations worldwide....they are in it for the almighty dollar and don't care one whit about their destruction and poisoning to the land and the people. Keep fighting. Save the Santa Ritas!
