Breathtakingly gorgeous cinematography,
weird and inventive dialogue, unnaturally
natural performances and a
heart-wrenching, minimal story have
doomed this film to obscurity. Basically,
two guys go for a walk in the desert and
get lost. End of story. If you like looking at
10-minute long sequences of people
silently walking through the desert (and if
you dont, then why are you living in
Tucson?) then you should see this movie,
which is easily one of the best things out
this year. Stars Matt Damon and Casey
Affleck and director Gus Van Sant wrote
this in what was obviously a labor of love,
and like most labors of love its gonna
have to be its own reward, because its
way too subtle and quiet for American
audiences. Its essentially a 1960s
European art film,
a la Antonioni,
but made in the early 21st century after
weve all given up on art and settled for
exploding space monster franchises.
Consider your ticket price a donation to
the preservation of culture, and go see
this, you know, for me. Because I ask so
little of you.
