Hot dogs, apple pie and baseball may be as all-American as Chevys, but we'd bet that going shopping is another popular American pastime. Shoppers get their own holiday of sorts with Independents Week (June 29 to July 6) and a Golden Coupon, offering 20 percent off a purchase at participating local businesses.
To kick off the week, Local First Arizona is holding a Passport to Local Success event from 4 to 8 p.m., on Saturday, June 28. Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Ryan Gaudioso of the Tucson Fire Department will kick off the event at 316 E. Fourth Ave. with some comments about shopping local. Remember that for every $100 spent at a local business, $73 remains in the local economy, as opposed to only $43 at a non-locally owned business.
Attendees of the event will receive a shopping passport that lists 20 merchants located along Fourth Avenue and Congress Street. For every business that is visited, passport holders will receive a stamp in their passport, enabling them to be entered in a raffle drawing for local merchant goodies. Live music and children's activities will be offered, as well as a special brew from Borderlands Brewing called Horchata Cream Ale.
