For the Bible Tells Me So

Apparently, some Christians are uncomfortable with homosexuality. And yet, as For the Bible Tells Me So illustrates, a lot of Christians have gay children. So what to do? This documentary takes a very fair look at the ways in which different Christians and Christian groups have responded to the modern, literalist readings of the Bible’s passages on homosexuals. Bishop Desmond Tutu, former Congressman Richard Gephardt and Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson provide some star power, but the real force of this film is in the interviews with ordinary Christians who have had to confront the conflict between their faith and their feelings for their gay children. Christians especially will be interested in some of the theological and interpretive positions presented by respected intellectuals of the church on just how the Bible’s edicts on homosexuality have been, and can be, understood. Anyone who has an interest in the recent move toward fundamentalist and literalist readings of the Bible, and the conflict that this presents for our country, will find For the Bible Tells Me So eye-opening in the way it shows how so many Christians, when directly confronted with the issue, are far kinder and more understanding than their highly visible leaders would prefer.
