Fight Club

When the great movies of the 1990s are named, Fight Club will be near the top of the list. Combining the obsessions of Bergman with the violence of Peckinpah and the cool of David Lynch, director Fincher weaves together an amazing tale of twisted identity and double meaning. This is one of those rare films that presents a completely different story upon a second viewing, and maybe even upon a third. The plot, about two friends who form an amateur boxing club and then move on to greater acts of mayhem, is essentially indescribable without giving away the film’s big secret, but I can say that it features truly great performances by Ed Norton, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter and, of course, Meat Loaf. If you’ve never been punched in the face by a movie, then you haven’t seen Fight Club.
