If you're one of many who saw and loved E.T. as a child when it was released in 1982, you'll be relieved and delighted to see in its 20-year anniversary re-release that it really is a fantastic film. Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore, who (with a band of dirt-bikers) help E.T. on Earth and toward home, are adorable, yet also very crafty, and they have what the child roles in so many modern American films lack: respect for life. They also have what characterizes kid roles today--an utter disrespect for institutions of authority. But that disrespect has reason and purpose here, and the viewer is with them all the way. E.T., the alien, may also be the most watchable cinematic creatures of all time.
