I'd like to welcome two new contributing writers to the Tucson Weekly family.
Laura C.J. Owen is our new freelance theater reviewer; she's taking the spot vacated earlier this year by Nathan Christensen.
Laura grew up in Tucson, and left to go to college. She earned her master's degree in fine arts from the University of Minnesota, and returned home to the Old Pueblo about a year ago. She writes book reviews for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and teaches at Pima Community College. As for her theater background: She did a lot of theater in college; has had several one-act plays produced; interned for the Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis; and was on the board of directors for the Off-Leash Area theater company in the Twin Cities.
You can peruse her review of the Gaslight Theatre's online here. Welcome, Laura!
Meanwhile, in the Currents section, you'll find the Tucson Weekly debut story by Brian J. Pedersen. He's our new news freelancer.
You may recognize his name thanks to his work at the Arizona Daily Star; he toiled over there from 1999 until September 2010, when he was let go. (You can read all about that in our Media Watch archives.) He started out in sports at the Star. He was the high school sports editor before moving over to one of the college-sports desks; he also covered the Tucson Sidewinders. Eventually, he transferred over to the news side, where he covered the northwest side, breaking news and, finally, public safety.
For the Weekly, Brian will cover public safety, the northwest side and all sorts of other cool stuff that we'll be determining soon. Welcome, Brian!
