Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema

Well, that was one heck of a midterm. It's been nearly a quarter century since Democrats have held a U.S. Senate seat in Arizona, but this year, Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema pulled off quite a trick in winning over voters in the middle and defeating Southern Arizona Congresswoman Martha McSally. And she wasn't the only Democrat to win statewide, either; as many as three more Democratic women may break the Democratic Party's decade-long drought in races for state office. I do the usual post-election breakdown in this week's cover story.

Elsewhere in the book this week: Regular contributor Kathleen B. Kunz briefs us on the lawsuit filed by the City of Tucson and Town of Marana in regards to water well contamination; unpaid intern Chandler Donald hikes out to Sabino Canyon to find out what's going on with tram service; arts writer Margaret Regan checks out a show by some longtime Tucson artists at PCC's Bernal Gallery; movie critic Bob Grimm says Overlord might be the best Nazi zombie movie ever; City Week editor Emily Dieckman talks to some rock 'n' roll grrrls who decided to do something about all the mansplaining plaguing the music industry; Cannabis 520 columnist Nick Meyers fills us on how the weed props in other states fared—and how that might impact a 2020 Arizona prop to legalize recreational weed; Chow writer Mark Whittaker sips coffee with the guys from Hermosa Roasting; and we have the usual mix of columns to advise you how to have fun in this burg.

Speaking of having fun in this burg: I'm joining Arizona Daily Star columnist Tim Steller to talk about political journalism following a screening of All the President's Men at the Loft Cinema on Sunday, Nov. 18. You can find details in the Reel Indie column on Page 20, but it's cosponsored by the UA School of Journalism and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.

A final note I'd really prefer not to be writing: Associate Editor Danyelle Khmara is moving on to the Arizona Daily Star. Danyelle has only been on staff here for a little over a year, but she's been helping out in various ways for longer than that and she's been pure dynamite. In her brief time here, Danyelle has been all over immigration, homelessness, education, politics, sex work and much more. She's brought home nine awards from the Arizona Press Club and the Arizona Newspaper Association, including Story of the Year among non-daily papers for an investigation into how a young man was killed by his cellmate in Pima County Jail. Beyond her journalistic chops, though, Danyelle is just an ultra-cool colleague and we're all gonna miss the energy she brought to the team. We've got one last investigation we'll be rolling in out in few weeks, but in the meantime: Best of luck at the morning daily, Danyelle!

See y'all at the Loft this weekend!
