The desert tortoise floats serenely in the rock pool, soaking and basking. It is solid as a rock, buoyant as a boat. It lives as it always did, not knowing it is on the edge where space shrinks to a point, and time collapses on itself. I would speak to those bright green eyes, but am ashamed to meet its gaze. It says nothing. —Norman Epstein
