In a land where villains reign unopposed, Gru (Steve Carell) is no better than second-best. In Despicable Me, he squares off against the more-innovative but less-determined Vector (Jason Segel) in an effort to steal the moon—but Gru doesn’t expect to harbor actual human feelings for the three orphans he adopts as pawns in the game for lunar domination. There’s a better movie in the basic premise than what appears on screen; Despicable Me wants badly to entertain audiences from 8 to 80, when it could be resoundingly good if it just split the difference. It isn’t without its merits, however, and Carell’s Gru is the kind of character that might be worth the inevitable sequel.
