After the primary election, both of the unsuccessful Democratic candidates, Randi Dorman and Steve Farley, said that they would support the winner, Regina Romero. Which of those two candidates supplied Ed Ackerley with the negative research on Regina Romero? Tom Danehy probably knows if it was Steve Farley or Randi Dorman, and if he doesn't know, he can easily find out. Then he needs to print it in the Tucson Weekly.
This is a childish tactic by Ed Ackerley, appealing to voters least informed instincts. I would like to see leaders in both the Pima County Democratic Party and the Pima County GOP condemn this foolishness, and donors should avoid a candidate who is this small.
Both Jim Nintzel and Tom Danehy in their Weekly columns today, managed to snub Regina Romero's accomplishments, political savvy and connection with Tucson voters, attributing her victory to outside money and to paraphrase, either it's the year of the woman or the year of the brown person. Gentlemen, wake up and quit being so patronizing. Try talking with some Regina Romero supporters, if you can get out of your bubble.
Gary Nabhan's article makes me even prouder to be a Tucsonan. Special praise to Michael McDonald and his team at the Community Food Bank for keeping many in southern Arizona from hunger.
To be clear, Matt Heinz paid for his own poll. What could go wrong? Mary Matiella has been running a grassroots campaign for nearly a year, visiting voters across CD2. Mary actually came in second in fundraising in the first quarter of this year, if Matt's $250,000 loan to himself is put in the "loan" column. Hers are grassroots donations, gained via meet and greets, knocking on doors and phoning voters. Her story, from being the daughter of farmworkers to graduating from Pueblo High and UA, to executive positions in the Forest Service, HUD and the Department of the Army (the latter an appointment by President Obama, is chronicled on her website: www.matiellaforcongress.com. Her progressive views don't change with the political winds, as with some candidates. Shiny objects, like polls and Steny Hoyer endorsements grab headlines. The voters will have the final say.
Arizona is preparing for its own water crisis by sitting idly by as the city of Benson gets ready to approve a new city three miles south of I-10 in the shadow of the Whetstone Mountains stretching east nearly to the San Pedro River. How about 70,000 more people living in a faux Tuscan town, the Villages at Vegneto? All brought to us by a Phoenix headquartered corporation, El Dorado Holdings, Inc., doing business locally as El Dorado Benson LLC, with investors from all over the country. Get ready for rural Arizona dotted with a brand new golf course or golf courses, vineyards and orchards!, a new resort, eight story commercial office buildings and more. Potential effects on the San Pedro River and its St. David Cienega? Potential effects on the San Pedro as it courses through Cascabel and through Dudleyville, where Gray Hawks and Mississippi Kites nest in verdant cottonwood trees? Here's a chance to have a real impact. The new city was approved 6-0 by the Benson P&Z this week. Next Monday, April 13, at 7 p.m., the developer's plan will be voted on the Benson City Council. Write a letter now to the mayor of Benson and the city council (all email addresses are online at the city of Benson web page). Also, attend the meeting, if you can. El Dorado Holdings pops into rural areas like Benson, Maricopa and Buckeye to build its new cities and it hopes no one is watching. This is a water crisis waiting to happen!
This is weak of Jeff Flake to not support the Manchin-Toomey bill. I hope that Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly will bring him around to support the bill and that Sen. Flake can get out from under the thumb of the National Rifle Assn.
The candidates that Jon Justice and Garrett Lewis, a.m. talk jocks in Tucson, support, often lose, e.g., Jesse Kelly, Frank Antenori (guest on the Justice show on Friday mornings), and all of the opponents of Raul Grijalva whose names have been forgotten. Nonetheless, their baseless claims should not go unanswered and Justice and Lewis should be held accountable for fabrications. With their lack of success in helping to elect far right candidates, they may eventually be beating the bushes for new gigs on the oldies stations.
The Ronstadt Transit Center is architectually attractive and is a convenient hub for bus riders. It provides pleasant "open space" during downtown events. It has been there for quite a while and newer residents and businesses have moved in knowing that it is there. Which neighborhood will be delighted to host the bus depot if it is moved? El Encanto? West University? This is going to be interesting.
