Jeepers, is this an awful film. Directed by Danny "An Embarrassment to New Jersey" DeVito, Death to Smoochy is at best a failing attempt to depict comic book and noir-style cliches against the absurd backdrop of the cutthroat capitalism behind childrens television. At worst and far more often, however, its an excuse for Robin Williams to take us on spastic two-minute white-pony rides through his milieu of tired caricatures, for Edward Norton to be boring with a silly suit on, for Jon Stewart to look like he wants to cry over this career choice, and for Catherine Keener to act a bit too believably like the witch who doesnt think any of it is funny. Useless overall, except as the perfect break-up movie: When you leave there is nothing left to say.
