The comic strip is a dying art. Two artists gave it a good go in the last 30 years. One of them would be Berkeley Breathed, creator of “Bloom County.” The other would be the almighty Bill Watterson and his epic strip, “Calvin & Hobbes.” Director Joel Allen Schroeder’s documentary takes a look at the legendary comic, its roots, and Watterson’s refusal to commercialize his creation. Interviews with the likes of Breathed, Seth Green and more discuss the significance of Watterson’s work, and his unique approach to the medium and refusal to “sell out.” The film isn’t put together all that well, but it is interesting to see early versions of the strip, along with the reasons why Watterson retired his pen. The movie is a bit dull, but it did inspire me to purchase “The Complete Calvin & Hobbes Collection.” God, what a great comic it was.
