Re: “Common Core's Long, Strange (And Ongoing) Trip

I began teaching in 1969 during which time we struggled with SLO's which were very similar to the Common Core standards. Since then I have taught thru several variations of the same thing. I do not believe a "one size fits all" approach is good in this changing world, however, I do maintain that all public school students must be taught to read, write and do math. After that, let's let our wonderful, skilled teachers teach!

Re: “Lumosity Says Tucson Isn't Among the Nation's 50 Smartest Cities — But Maybe We're Just Not Falling For Their Games

David, I read your article, went to the Lumosity site ... And concur that it is a trick costing money to prove you are or are not smart. Somewhat counterintuitive? As to Tucson itself, having lived there on & off for three years it is my observation that it is not one of the smartest place I've lived! Most ASU students come & leave quickly. Your super-conservative state is a national beacon for low intelligence. Poor public schools, off-the-chart racial intolerance and, I won't even begin on your governor & state legislature! However, the sunshine is pleasant.

Re: “Ask a Mexican!

Not sure why I need to say this, but I am an old white woman who reads your column faithfully. I learn something every column & just wanted to thank you for writing it.

Re: “Get Out Of Town!

People Who Don't Use the Self- Checkout Lane for a Few Items" Remember every self check-out line is a job --- GONE! Real people used to person that line....the ones who smiled and asked how your day was going. Real people who used that job to feed and clothe themselves and their families! Please do not use self-checkout lines. And, Irene, slow down and relax, you'll live longer.

Re: “Danehy

Thank you for your comments. It shows what we know, that while there are problems in education today, the truth is that our children are well educated (ever tried to math homework with the average h.s. junior?), esp. since we educate all children that come to our doors. After 30 years in education, teaching K-grad. school, I can honestly say I have seen powerful and purposeful education going on in many, many classrooms. Thanks.
