The sweet simplicity of Margret and H.A. Reys popular childrens books is perfectly translated onto the big screen. Director Matthew OCallaghan achieves this through no-frills animation that has a warm glow radiating from the bright colors and creamy texture, as well as a basic screenplay containing no pop-culture puns or in-jokes. Because of this, parents will eke through the 83-minute running time, while children actually comprehend the plot of The Man in the Yellow Hat (Will Ferrell) needing an African King Kong-like statue to save the museum from closing. The under-8 crowd will also be able to identify with the title character, who has trouble being understood by adults and understanding adults themselves, while he has many little misadventures. This G-rated cartoon is as carefree as the films whimsical balloon ride over the city.
