Crystal Fairy

There are generally three types of drug flicks: fun, depressing and boring. The agonizingly pretentious Crystal Fairy firmly lands in the last category, and then some. It seems to me that Michael Cera is trying ever so hard to shake his milquetoast persona. After playing a coked-out parody of himself in this summer’s This Is the End, Cera now plays a smarmy, self-absorbed jerk hanging out in Chile, doing blow with drag queens and gathering some Chilean hipsters to accompany him on a road trip to chug down a hallucinogenic cactus brew. Along the way they meet up with Crystal Fairy (ex-child star and a very nude Gaby Hoffman), an American hippie with “healing chakra stones” and a few dark secrets. Everybody hangs out together, telling bad jokes, writhing on seashells and going on a “psychoactive voyage.” Groan. Cera, you should’ve stuck with the banana stand.

Crystal Fairy is not showing in any theaters in the area.
