Circo
The circus may still be a big business in some parts of the world, but it can’t be the draw it once was, and the treatment of animals is a big social issue now. In rural Mexico, Tino Ponce and his family still operate a traveling circus, Circo Mexico, which faces uncertain economics, family strife and dwindling interest. This debut documentary by Aaron Schock, and featuring music by Calexico, sheds light on the people who have grown up in this circus and how they cope with the realities of an outdated form of entertainment and an outdated way of life. Wisely, Circo reserves judgment on its characters and their situations, letting the heartbreaking story play out for itself.
