Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to director Rob Marshall’s electrifying remake of Bob Fosse’s 1975 sensational Broadway musical that will keep you at the edge of your seats with its punch, pow and pizzazz that bursts off the screen. Starring in tonight’s Best Picture is Catherine Zeta-Jones. She gives a command performance as the aggressive brunette and accused felon with a flamboyant movie-star presence that owns the celebrity spotlight. The surprisingly impressive Renée Zellweger plays a precious blonde-haired babydoll with determined dreams of capturing the full attention of the media’s eyes and creates stiff competition with every self-centered and jealousy-driven, deceitful tactic. To round off this top billing is Richard Gere’s character as the sharp-witted and quick-tongued conniving lawyer, who, like his two publicity hounds, believes that all the world is a stage and he must play everyone’s part. The film skillfully uses dramatized ideals represented by well-choreographed and unforgettable song and dance numbers shot in bright primary colors, and cuts to underwhelming real-life woes depicted in drab gray and brown hues. This flawless and energized entertainment is one of the best films of 2002. It swept the Golden Globe nominations and did the same on the Oscar ballot.
