Chicago 10

Rated NR

A very clever piece of filmmaking, combining documentary footage of the 1968 Democratic National Convention and re-enactments of the trial of the “Chicago 8,” who were charged with inciting a riot. What I like best about this film is that the re-enactments are done with cheesy 3-D computer imagery. So in case you were wondering what Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin and Bobby Seale would look like if they lived inside World of Warcraft, well, wonder no more. There are some fine voice actors working behind the animation, including Hank Azaria, Liev Schreiber, Jeffrey Wright and, in one of his final roles, the great Roy Scheider. The re-enactments are word-for-word from the court transcripts and really capture the insanity of the proceedings. There are also some nice psychedelic cartoon re-creations of the riots, and a real sense of the chaos that enveloped the country back when the Democrats were the party of war-mongering, lies and a police state run wild.
