You can’t help but wonder if there’s some autobiography in Chef, the new film from director Jon Favreau. After all, Favs broke in by writing Swingers, riding the crest of the indie wave of the mid-1990s, but now he’s known for big-budget stuff like Iron Man. Chef, about a famous chef who gives the finger to his high-profile restaurant to get back to his roots, seems very much like Jon Favreau hitting reset on a career that made him really rich and famous, but maybe compromised his artistic bent. The film is entirely good-natured, so positive in fact that you keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. But Chef is the lazy Sunday of movies: It’s a beautiful day, there’s no drama and, oh, what tasty food. Seriously, even though the film is no masterpiece, the food alone makes it worth seeing. Just not on an empty stomach.
