I know that sounds like a Jim Click commercial, but it's true. Check out what's going on with youth and arts in the Tucson community and those involved will even feed you.
Art in Reality, or AIR, is an innovative arts program for high school age kids with little access to arts opportunities. The group is holding its fall show, Keepin' It Real, which features an intriguing lineup of entertainment. Guests will see sets from the urban arts classes (aerosol art, DJ school and hip hop culture), the cultural movement/dance classes (Latin dance, African dance and drumming, karate) and the visual art and poetry classes (charcoal drawing and social change, painting, poetry, Japanese bookmaking, mask-making and jewelry).
Each set will feature unique expressions of the different art forms. To top it all off, the culinary arts class will be cooking up its best recipes for all of the guests following the show.
The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Nations Hall at Muse (formerly the International Arts Center), at 516 N. Fifth Ave. Admission to the show and dinner is free and open to the public. PHUN INTENDED. If you've never seen a bubble burn, you've just gotta see this.
But burning bubbles are just the beginning. The highlight of the University of Arizona physics department's 18th annual Physics Phun Nite? Witnessing a professor lie on a bed of nails and have a cement block broken upon him. (It's a good bet a few struggling freshmen will be on hand to see that.)
In the past, phun-loving visitors have seen hair-raising demonstrations of the Van de Graaff generator, visual and auditory illusions, singing/dueling sewer pipes, dancing flames and giant smoke rings.
In addition, there will be a demonstration of "light saber" technology and rocket propulsion.
Physics Phun Nite starts at 7 p.m. Thursday in Room 201 of the Physics-Atmospheric Sciences building on the UA campus at 1118 E. Fourth St. It's a free event but seating is limited. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 621-6826.
