Cheap Thrills

POT POURRI: The Arizona State Museum preserves the past with Saving Southwest Traditions: The Pottery Project.

This new exhibit showcases the center's own exquisite pottery collection, which was recently ranked an official project of Save America's Treasures, itself a public-private partnership between the White House Millennium Council and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Quite a mouthful, but well worth it. The ASM is the oldest and largest anthropology museum in the region, and home to the world's most comprehensive collection of Southwest Indian poetry. In turn, the project focuses on nearly 20,000 vessels documenting 2,000 years of prehistory and history in the American Southwest and northern Mexico. Collectively, the pots represent virtually every cultural group in the region.

Highlights include a set of San Ildefonso Pueblo dinnerware donated by Ansel Adams; Nampeyo pottery; pieces ranging from AD 500 to the present; and ceramics from landmark excavations by anthropology pioneers Byron Cummings and Emil Haury.

Exhibit continues through the fall in the ASM, on the UA campus inside the main gate east of Park Avenue. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. For information, call 621-6302.
