Charlie Bartlett

Rated NR

Even though it resembles cult classics like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Rushmore, this story of rebellion against authority will never achieve the acclaimed of those films. Anton Yelchin stars as the obnoxious title character, a scam artist kicked out of countless private schools, so he enrolls in a public school as a last resort. The delinquent quickly battles the new-kid woes by dispensing prescription drugs, holding therapy sessions in the school bathroom and sleeping with the principal’s daughter. Writer Gustin Nash’s screenplay admirably breaks the high school stereotypes, but the campy sing-alongs with Bartlett’s ditsy lush of a mom (Hope Davis) reduce this movie to straight-to-video quality.
