Patricia Clarkson, one of the finest actresses in the world, plays Juliette, a United Nations worker’s wife visiting Cairo. Her husband is supposed to meet up with her, but he’s delayed, leaving her in the company of Tareq (Alexander Siddig), a kind and handsome coffee-shop owner. Hey, American U.N. workers: Don’t leave your wives in the company of kind and handsome coffee shop owners in Cairo! Clarkson is good in Ruba Nadda’s quiet and surprisingly romantic film, and Siddig is every much her equal. The two make an engaging couple, and the city offers a backdrop that’s equally inviting and intimidating. The movie shows that two people walking and talking, and exchanging a quick embarrassed kiss, can be quite intoxicating. This is sort of a Lost in Translation relocated to Cairo from Japan.
