Director Frederick Wiseman eschews interviews and, well, any kind of structure for his intimate look at a boxing gym in Austin, Texas. Wiseman simply films people training and occasionally talking about the sport … and it’s a lot more interesting than it sounds. The gym is populated by true characters—everybody from veteran boxers readying themselves for final bouts to babies just chillin’ as Mommy works out—and it’s kind of fascinating to watch them work the bags or punch the air. For some, it’s a way of life; for others, it’s a release, and Wiseman doesn’t need a lot of rhetoric to get his point across. This film is sparse on dialogue, yet it delivers a very clear message about the value of this establishment.
