Bowling for Columbine

Rated NR

With wit and courage, writer/director Michael Moore takes an in-your-face look at the overwhelming resurgence of gun violence in America with this provocative and controversial Oscar-winning documentary. Moore is a sharpshooter instructor, member of the NRA and does not oppose gun ownership. What he does oppose is when these guns are used to kill other people. He raises intriguing questions in an attempt to get at the heart of why Americans are so afraid and rely on guns to solve their fears. Not only does Moore raise intriguing questions but raises them in intriguing ways. He uses authentic footage from the security cameras taken during the infamous Columbine High School massacre, presents a retelling of a 6-year-old shooting another 6-year-old, and conducts an interview with NRA President, Charlton Heston. But what may be the most unforgettable scene is when two innocent Columbine survivors, both of whom still have the bullets in their bodies, enter Kmart to ask for a refund on these bullets that the store sold to the guilty juvenile shooters. This poignant and eye-opening film received an R rating by the MPAA. While many will be impacted and inspired to rethink their violent behaviors, a large portion of the population that this film addresses unfortunately will not.
