Eegee's Is Testing a Sugar-Free Flavor

While flavors of the month come and go, the Eegee's frozen fruit drink has largely stayed the same over the restaurant's history. Nearly every version of the classic Tucson beverage has the same ingredients: sugar, water and, usually, natural fruit juices (generally, orange, FYI). However, while these drinks are quite delicious, the amount of sugar involved between the fruit and the actual sugar is not insignificant (35 grams in a 12 ounce drink, 130 calories).

So, the idea of a sugar-free Eegee's is sort of a welcome one. Sweetened with Truvia, the Skinny-Berry Strawberry Eegee's (which isn't a zero calorie option, after all, there's still fruit and fruit juice involved) is still in the testing phase at the moment and not for sale, but when web producer David Mendez and I tried samples earlier this week at the 3250 E. Valencia location, we were generally happy with the results. The regular strawberry is actually a bit too sweet for my tastes (I'm solidly in the lemon camp), so the less-cloying version worked for me. I thought the texture of the sample was a bit more grainy and snow-coneish than usual, but who knows, that could have been due to other factors. As someone who should probably endeavor to ingest as few calories as possible, if my beloved lemon is offered in this format, I'd probably make the switch.
