Sometimes, in the midst of a conversation that jumps from one topic (beer festivals) to another (pro wrestling) to another (birthday parties), one is bound to be struck with an altogether brilliant idea—an idea that must be acted upon immediately.
In this instance, Tucson Weekly editor Dan Gibson made the bold call, upon learning that there were no stand-alone Carvel Ice Cream locations in Tucson, to demand Fudgie the Whale cakes so he can relive the memories of enjoying ice cream cake with his closest friends and family.
This is his letter, and the response that followed.

Subject: Fudgie the Whale availablity in Tucson
Dear Carvel people,
There, sadly, is no longer a Carvel location in Tucson, although there are cakes available at local supermarkets. My question is this: why don’t the supermarket locations carry Fudgie the Whale? Your cakes are great and appropriate for any occasion, but really, why not offer Fudgie as well and allow Tucsonans to have a whale of a time?
I make this promise…if I can get Fudgie the Whale here in Tucson, I will purchase one every week for my staff here at the Tucson Weekly for what I will call “Fudgie Friday.”
Thanks for your time,
Editor, Tucson Weekly

Good Morning Dan,
Thank you for your e-mail. While we do not have a Carvel shoppe in your area (the closest one is in Mesa, AZ), you can always seek out a grocery store that carries our products to see if they can order you some Fudgie The Whale cakes (because no one should be deprived of Fudgie!). For a list of stores in your area, please visit the website for the manufacturer of our retail items— http://www.icecreamcakeland.com/product-locator/ .
Again, thank you for your e-mail. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns as I would be more than happy to assist you.

So there you have it, Tucson. We should all be able to get our cake—and eat it, too. I look forward to dying, happily, of chocolate whale-related health complications.
Viva Fudgie Fridays!
