Best One-Shot Production

Doubt

It fell not to one of Tucson's regular theater companies, but to a group of expert enthusiasts, to offer a local production of John Patrick Shanley's 2005 Tony- and Pulitzer-winning play about the conflict between conformity and questioning, and the assertion of truth in the absence of facts. The ostensible topic is whether or not a with-it young priest abuses a student in a 1960s Catholic school, but the play's real substance is the sparring and maneuvering of the characters. That was a great strength of this production: sincere, complex and intermittently funny performances by Art Almquist, Lesley Abrams, Carrie Hill and T Loving, with smart direction by Amy Almquist. Too bad they don't organize a full season.
