Most TV kind of rots your brain—and it sure doesn't foster community. Access Tucson, our own independent, nonprofit public-access television station, is the opposite. It has shows that inspire you to think, feel and act, on subjects from Howard Zinn to ancient Peru to solar energy to training your dog. Most shows (a notable exception: Democracy Now!) are produced locally, featuring local events, groups, artists and musicians—and almost anyone can embark on the path to becoming a show producer themselves. Access Tucson hosts production classes, even for kids and teens, and offers a wide variety of production facilities for the community. Tragically, this station barely survived the recession and is still struggling to infuse your basic cable with a little local flavor. Check out the website, and think about donating or volunteering.
