Sabino Canyon

Speaking of Edward Abbey: He opposed the future as articulated by Dwight Eisenhower ("the military-industrial complex"), George Orwell (1984) and Ridley Scott (Blade Runner). The movie Lonely Are the Brave, featuring Kirk Douglas, Walter Matthau and Carroll O'Connor, and based on Abbey's classic novel The Brave Cowboy, was recently released on DVD. In this movie, the mountains are always in the background, a kind of refuge where if the shit really hits the fan, you can flee up there to freedom and a kind of honor. Sabino Canyon is that kind of place—where you can always strap on a backpack and go back home.
