Re: “The Mayor of Fourth Avenue

I met Mike, Mimi and their five great children when a girlfriend of mine rented a small cabina behind the house they were living in when they first arrived in Tucson. It was the beginning of a 40 year love affair. They were just starting to make jewelry and taught me how to make ring shanks, but more importantly, they taught me about the stones that went into the jewelry, which started me on a path of stone cutting and eventually gemology that I'm still on to this day. However, the most important thing that he taught me was how to be a good human being! Mike was a father figure and a great friend when I sorely needed one, and even though I lost touch with them when I moved to Costa Rica in 1998 and then to Hawaii in 2001, I've always considered all of the Haggerty's, Family. Mike was a great friend to me and helped me in more ways than I could possibly put into words. He was the most generous, kind soul I have ever had the privilege to know. He always found the time and amazing patience and love, to lead me back onto the correct path when I strayed. I know I'm not the only one he did that for as I witnessed him help countless others without ever asking or expecting anything in return. That was just the kind of man he was. Thanks Mike, rest in peace.
