Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest

Character actor Michael Rapaport loves hip hop. His son is named for a member of De La Soul. That immersion lends him a certain credibility as a director of this documentary, but it also hinders his ability to tell the most impactful story he can. A Tribe Called Quest remains one of the most influential acts in hip hop, 20-odd years after it arrived on the scene. Ingeniously blending jazz samples, Q-Tip's heady lyrics and Phife Dog's memorable raps, Tribe was a more musically inclined hip hop. The band members also stopped getting along after a few years, which is certainly not uncommon. A great peek behind the curtain, Beats, Rhymes and Life tries to present too many angles. A more focused film would have been excellent, although the one we have is still pretty good.
