Alex Pettyfer plays Kyle, a douchebag high school student who humiliates outcast Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen). That’s a big mistake, because Kendra is a witch who turns him into a hideous monster, making him as ugly on the outside as he is on the inside. Kyle has one year to find someone to love him in his hideous state, or he’ll be cursed to look like that forever. He eventually saves Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens) from a drug deal gone wrong involving her father, and takes her in to protect her. As a modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast, this is actually quite good, due in part to a good supporting cast that includes Neil Patrick Harris and Lisa Gay Hamilton as Kyle’s caretakers, and a quietly sweet performance by Hudgens. It’s not an amazing or groundbreaking film, but it’s a nice film to share with a loved one.
