A LOTTA BIT COUNTRY
If you're a country music junkie, chances are you're going to be pretty torn on Thursday, April 23. 73-year-old country music icon Merle Haggard is playing at Fox Theatre at 17 W. Congress St. that night beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are available in advance for $47 to $67, depending on where you sit, at www.foxtucsontheatre.com.
However, before you snatch up your spot at Haggard's show, you should also know that Steve Earle and The Dukes are playing down the street that night as well at the Rialto Theatre. Tickets for the show, which starts at 8 p.m. with The Mastersons, are $30 and can be found, along with more information, at www.rialtotheatre.com. Both events are all ages and the choice is yours, cowboy.
MIX TAPE
Locals Algae + Tentacles and Phoenix's Run-On Sunshine are joining up on a split tape release that will have each band swapping songs for the release. The cassette will feature Algae + Tentacles covering Run-On Sunshine's "Aviation Bikeway" and Run-On Sunshine covering "Where the Kids Are Dead" from Algae + Tentacles, mashing the name of both songs together to get the name of the release—"Where the Kids Are Bikeways." The tape will also feature a few original songs.
You can pick up your copy of "Where the Kids Are Bikeways" at 191 Toole on Saturday, April 25. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., Hibris and Psywave will kick off the all ages show, which will culminate with both groups featured on the tape. The show is $5 at the door, located at 191 E. Toole Ave., the day of the show.
MODERN FOLK
Eclectic electronic group A Tribe Called Red will be playing at The Flycatcher on Tuesday, April 28. Fusing First Nations music—an aboriginal musical style from Canada that utilizes tribal vocal chanting—with modern dubstep, hip hop and reggae styles, the three electronic musicians will bring their unique and highly-acclaimed dance music to Fourth Avenue. DJ Dirtyverbs will join with a DJ set featuring his blend of world music and cumbia dance jams. Tickets for the 21 and over performance are $15 in advance at www.rialtotheatre.com. The show starts at 9 p.m. at 340 E. 6th St.
MONSTER MASH
Reptar—the band, not the Godzilla-like creature from Nickelodeon's "Rugrats"—are not afraid to get a little weird. In fact, that's what sets this Athens, Georgia-based band apart from other indie rock outfits. Well, that and the sunny keyboards and upbeat drum-centric style that made their most recent release, "Lurid Glow," an instant favorite. You can catch them live at Club Congress, located at 311 E. Congress St., on Wednesday, April 29. Locals Best Dog Award will kick off the keyboard-filled night with doors at 7 p.m. The all ages show is $12 at the door the day of the concert.
