LET'S GO CRAZY

Picking your favorite Prince song is kind of like picking which limb you could live without. The man was an icon for weirdoes, and his death on Thursday, April 21 at just 57 years old was as tragic as it was shocking. I've seen several comments about how people need to stop being so surprised when celebrities like this die and to those comments I say, screw you. Prince was a legend. His music, his eccentric and amazing fashion sense, his attitude and his commitment to being wholly himself resonated with so many people who felt like outsiders. Plus, seeing him play live, I can say he was one of the best guitarists (and performers in general) that have ever graced the face of this planet.

That's why you can and should spend all weekend celebrating the life and music of Prince. On Friday, April 29, head to the Loft Cinema (3233 E. Speedway Blvd.) for a Purple Rain sing-a-long ($9.50) starting at 7 p.m. Then, that same night at 9 p.m., DJ Herm will be spinning Prince all night long at Hotel Congress (311 E. Congress St.) for free. Finally, on Saturday, April 30, watch local Prince tribute act, The New Purple Generation, get down to some funky Prince jams ($5) at Rialto Theatre (318 E. Congress St.). The finale event will also present the unveiling of a Prince mural, painted by resident muralist Joe Pagac. For more information, visit www.rialtotheatre.com.
