B-Sides: Mommy Long Legs

MOM ROCK

Following in the Pacific Northwest legacy of sardonic feminist punk, Mommy Long Legs arrives on the scene as loud and unrelenting as you'd expect. Hammering percussion, off-kilter harmonies and plenty of hollerin' cements the band firmly in the tenets riot grrrl set forth by their aural forebears, though at the same time the band name itself seems to poke fun at the absurdly misguided notions of "equality as the same" that seem to plague the movement. The music itself is fun and demands its listeners to get up and get moving, and while the lyrics are funny, it's only to convey honest messages about "Assholes" and "Cat Callers." You know, you laugh sometimes so you don't just punch a wall.

Anyway, you can catch Mommy Long Legs free at Club Congress (311 E. Congress St.) on Friday, March 18. The Seattle-based band will be joined by Boyfriends (phew), Dirt Friends and Big Bad. Doors are at 8 p.m. and it's a 21 and over event.
