AFFECTIONATE LEADER

It's no doubt that, while never quite commercially successful, Bronx-born DJ Afrika Bambataa helped mold the sounds that founded hip hop. Fusing electronic beats, funky rhythms and more, rap founding father Bambataa pioneered a style of DJing known as breakbeat, but the reaches of this prolific beat maker go past the style, even resulting in a popular rock crossover in the way of Rage Against the Machine covering his "Renegades of Funk" (Yeah, that's a cover).

Take the opportunity to see this legendary musician live in an incredibly intimate setting when Bambataa transforms the Solar Culture Gallery (31 E. Toole Ave.) to Planet Rock on Sunday, March 13. I have a strong feeling this 16 and over show will sell out, so get your tickets, which are $20, in advance at www.statesidepresents.com. The show kicks off at 8 p.m. with 2015 "Best of Tucson"-winning DJ Herm.
