Aren't You Even Gonna Kiss Me Goodbye?

Rated NR

This William Richert film, originally released in 1988 as A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon, has been recut and rereleased with Richert’s voice replacing River Phoenix’s in the part of the noir-style narrator. While originally marketed as a teen-sex comedy, it is nothing of the sort; instead, the 17-year-old characters spout beatnik dialogue, sport ’60s clothes and ’80s hair, and fuck around like Madonna before she went through menopause. Phoenix stars as the baby-faced Lothario who blows his college money on abortions; Meredith Salenger plays his virginal love interest; and Matthew Perry and Ione Skye play his best friend and sex buddy, respectively. The soundtrack makes the film seem like it fell out of 1962, got a new haircut and some bad acting, and then attempted valiantly to fight against the wave of John Hughes movies. Sadly, it died in the theaters, but if you want to see a movie that is, if not exactly good, at least a compellingly strange mixture of ’50s noir, early-'60s Technicolor romance and late-'70s teen film, Kiss Me might be worth checking out.
