American Teacher

Rated NR 81 minutes 2011

American Teacher explains the current financial crisis as seen through the eyes of teachers. Several educators discuss their troubles in finding decent pay; some say that they’ve needed to find second jobs, or leave the education field entirely, in order to make it in today’s economy. While the people interviewed come off as a bit melodramatic, the facts are there to support their frustrations. The job of a teacher is tiring, and this documentary sheds light on that fact in an articulate and thoughtful way, showing the trials and stresses that go along with trying to educate children in a system that isn’t well-funded.
