The second installment of this bizarre horror anthology series is a big improvement over the first. 26 directors are each given a letter in the alphabet and a corresponding word (for example, “X” is for “Xylophone”). Then each director gets a couple of minutes to direct a short film involving that word or phrase. The film in not rated, like its predecessor, and this would be due to some heavy violence. Lots of necks getting torn out, heads getting chopped off, and bodies being torn in half by mutated badgers. My favorite episode would be the one for “M” and that’s all I am going to say about that. Most of the segments are in live action color, but one in particular is shot in a ‘50’s looking black and white, while others are stop motion and drawn animation. The changes in format help to keep things from getting tedious. I recall that there were a lot of clunkers in the first one. It had some bigger genre directors involved (Ti West, Ben Wheatley) but it lacked a certain consistency. This installment has less along the lines of recognizable directors, but more when it comes to creativity and humor. Non-horror fans will need to avoid this like the plague. It’s quite disgusting, but perfect if you are looking for a sick Saturday night out.
