Abandon

We were all excited to see that this suspense picture is the first movie directed by Stephen Gaghan, who wrote the script for the sizzling Traffic. And it’s, well, OK. Katie Holmes (of Dawson’s Creek fame) plays a promising college senior whose life is thrown into upheaval by the inopportune re-appearance of the creepy boyfriend (Charlie Hunnam) who vanished two years earlier. Benjamin Bratt is a sullen, hunky detective on the case. Should we have expected something better from Gaghan? Sure, but this garden-variety, noir-romantic, double-cross thriller is intended more as a vehicle for the perky Holmes than an artistic statement. Bonus: It features the wonderful up-and-coming character actresses Zooey Deschanel (Almost Famous, The Good Girl) and Melanie Lynskey (Heavenly Creatures, The Cherry Orchard).
