A New Gemeration

The 9th annual Gem and Jam Music Festival is an outgrowth of the renowned Gem & Mineral Show, which brings an influx of people into Tucson each year. The festival, which takes place on Thursday, Feb. 5, 6 and 7 from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., integrates precious minerals into its stage design and with its spiritual energy. Its curious blend of the laid-back hippie mentality associated with Woodstock and Burning Man and the fast-paced neon rave scene found at Electric Daisy Carnival and Tomorrowland makes it decidedly unique. The experience isn't limited to electronic and experimental music alone, either. There's a strong emphasis on the festival's art counterparts, which include lectures, installations and live artists who will be creating pieces throughout the weekend. The festival also offers workshops that play up its bohemian side: Crystal Contraception, centered on holistic approaches to reproductive regulation and Sacred Plants for Lucid Consciousness, aimed at achieving enhanced dream lucidity. Tickets cost $45 per day or $129 for the weekend (not all workshops are included). The event is at 1102 W. Grant Road. For more info, visit the website gemandjamfestival.com
